The Persevering Evergreen Tree

Written by Sarah Payne, Edited by Emily Fischer

Mycelium, by Sam Unger

Disappointment and error strike at the worst of times,

Always creeping up within the dead of night; you feel as if you committed a crime.

Up above the iced-over pavement, crowning itself where the birds fly, an evergreen tree stands.

Triumphant, stable, and able to be climbed upon by way of both feet and hands.

The evergreen tree is ever so persevering, encouraging the watchers down below.

And I am just a girl, trying to cope with my faults; coping in order to not feel hollow.

Yet even as a child, I dreamed of my future, tried to envision the reality I wanted.

Pain and suffering are a part of life; one doesn’t have to break down and feel haunted.

A humble imagination uses invisible paint to design its destiny in the skies where the evergreen tree stays forever,

Meanwhile, I no longer dread my inevitable shortcomings; they’re within the truth of life. Onto the next endeavor!
